Welcome to the extra PACE newsletter. Stuff we'd love you to know about but can't fit into the printed copy!

Latest news from PACE Secondary services

During 2011 the focus has been on health education, how to keep our bodies and clothes clean. There have been visits to the laundrette and since the second half of the Spring term, the group have been responsible for completing lunch time washing of towels etc. This has involved one student each lunch time taking washing up to the laundry room, setting the machine programme, then at the end of the day collecting and laying out the washing to dry.

We have continued to use the local community, focusing on choices when shopping, scanning items, paying for food and preparation of lunch fortnightly. Additionally there have been visits to the Elgiva Theatre in Chesham, the local Garden Centre, two visits to Watford; the second to both the Cinema and to Frankie and Bennies, and also to Whipsnade Animal Park.

This year a new focus has been on socialising together during part of a lunch time. We have been playing games, telling jokes and sharing likes and dislikes.

In Science we linked lessons to the whole school topics of Light Fantastic and Food Glorious Food. We focused on Light Phenomenon and Light Sources, Ecosystems and Food Chains. Providing links with Living Things and Life Processes the group have watched and cared for their own salad plants, which will have been eaten by the time you are reading this!

We have continued to follow both Rapid Maths and Rapid Reading schemes. To develop literacy skills of comprehension, we have also been completing comprehension exercises to aid a better understanding of what is being read.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has been incorporated into many curriculum areas and there have been opportunities to use the Internet for research, to select and order shopping online and also to develop word processing skills.

The group have participated in all of the whole School topic events which have included music and dance, a drama performance, food tasting and even our own street party celebrating the Royal Wedding. Students also had a special opportunity to complete an animation project and also visit the gym on alternate weeks. A busy this year!

Since the publication of the PACE Newsletter we have had some lovely comments from grandparents that we would like to share here.

From Margaret and Geoff Beale: "Margaret and I would like to say a big heartfelt THANK YOU for all the hard work that the PACE staff have put into bringing our dear granddaughter to where she is now, a bright, cheeky, normal nearly six year old. We are sure that without your input she would not have achieved so much."

From Carmel Dennehy: "Ciaran is a special boy. He enjoys going out on his bike with his sister, Mum and Dad and loves taking his new dog Mia along too. He loves the X Factor, music, swimming and drama classes. At PACE he enjoys meeting all his friends, smiles a lot and is happy. I love him very much... love grandma."
